Saturday, 19 May 2012 00:17

David Rooney, a senior student at McNeese University, has been named the Southland Conference outdoor track and field athlete of the year US.  Rooney was also named the conference's men's outstanding runner in addition to his men's athlete of the year accolade. He won the league's 10,000 meter run with a time of 30:51.78 and set a conference championship record in the 5,000 meters with a winning time of 14:05.80. His time beat the previous record set in 2008 by Texas A&M Corpus Christi's Shadrack Songok by more than 15 seconds and ranks fifth all-time in the Southland's performance list. He also holds the second-best 5,000 meters time all-time, clocking in at 13:53.04 at the Mt. SAC Relays earlier this season. Rooney is second athlete from McNeese to win athlete of the year and outstanding runner awards, joining Kristian Rahnu who also won both awards in 2001.

Meanwhile, two Raheny athletes were in action at an international meeting in Namur, Belgium on Thursday night. Jamie Davis was 4th in the 100m in 11.01 while Zoe Browne finished second in the pole vault with a best of 3.91m.

Kevin Dooney just misses breaking 42 year old record PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 16 May 2012 22:41

KEVIN Dooney (right) fell agonisingly short of breaking Frank Greally's 42 year old Irish junior 10,000m record of 30.17 when he ran 30.23.7 at tonight's Dublin County Board Graded meeting in Irishtown. He did have the consolation of breaking the club junior record of 30.25 which was set by Dick Hooper in July 1975.

Brian Leahy (31.40.84) and Donal Foley (34.34.05) also competed in the 10,000m event in Irishtown. Other club results from the Graded included 200m Brian McGovern 23.71; John Hayes 26.62 and Liam Sheehan 27.4. Jake McDonnell was sixth in the 1500m in 4.03.52. Barry O'Donoghue had a 4.9m effort in the long jump while Mike Davis recorded a 11.25m effort in the triple jump.

The women's 200m races were dominated by Raheny athletes; Victoria Dwyer was the fastest posting a time of 25.95 just ahead of Aisling Drumgoole 25.99. Other times recorded were Ciara Lynch 26.74; Jenny Corcoran 27.18 and Maeve Sheehan 28.18. In the discus Mieke Kiernan threw 20.32m.  Full results on Dublin Athletic Board website.

Meanwhile on Day 1 of the Leinster schools' track and field finals in Santry Eoin Strutt (St Fintan's) won a silver medal in the U-16 mile clocking a time of 4.47.05.
